School shuts for the rest of the week after rise in cases

-

A CARDIFF school has shut for the rest of this week after a rise in coronavirus cases.

Fitzalan High School, which has more than 1,700 pupils, shut yesterday morning. The school said in a statement that it was being supported by health and safety officials.

Last week seven coronavirus cases were reported across three year groups at the school, according to Cardiff council data.

The council would not confirm whether there have been any more cases since.

A spokesperson for the school said: “In response to a rise in positive cases of Covid-19 confirmed at the school and to reduce transmission of the virus, all teaching will move online for the remainder of the week, with the exception of vulnerable groups of learners.

“The school is being supported by health and safety officers to review the situation and updates will be communicated to pupils and parents during the week.”

Parents were sent a message this morning telling them the school was shut and all work would be online for the rest of this week.

The text message said: “All pupils should work from home for the rest of this week. Lessons will be conducted via teams, please follow your usual timetable. We may contact you directly to let you know that your child can come to school.”

A total of 11 new coronavirus cases were reported by eight other schools in Cardiff at the start of this week, seven of them among staff.

The schools affected were Bryn Celyn Primary School, Grangetown Primary School, Pencaerau Primary School, Ysgol Treganna, Trelai Primary School, Ty Gwyn School, Whitchurch High School and Willows High School.
