LGBT+ bar announces plans to open in new canal quarter

-

AN LGBT+ bar has announced its plans to open in Cardiff’s new canal quarter.

The DockFeeder revealed on Twitter that it’s “coming soon” to the proposed open space on Churchill Way in the east of the city centre.

Cardiff Council revealed plans to transform the area, opening up the old dock feeder canal underneath the top half of Churchill Way, running from Queen Street to North Edward Street.

It would form a new green public open space, with trees, shrubs and benches, a performance stage and a covered outdoor dining area.

The venue described itself as a “bold new LGBT+ bar concept” and added it’s “coming soon”.

Construction work on the wider plans has yet to start, but in January Churchill Way was closed for three weeks for ground investigation assessments to be carried out underneath the road.

The tweet from the people behind the new venue added: “We are proud to announce a bold new LGBT+ bar concept coming soon to Churchill Way.

“We’ll form a part of Cardiff’s new canal quarter, an exciting new development which will see the reopening of the dock feeder canal underneath Churchill Way to form a vibrant public space.”

The canal is a key part of the plan to reduce flooding in the city centre. Sustainable drainage techniques around the canal would be used to soak up excess rainwater.

Four main roads – Stuttgarter Strasse, Boulevard de Nantes, Dumfries Place and Station Terrace – would see wider pavements, segregated cycle lanes, and priority bus lanes.

Wildflowers would be planted on top of bus stops along these roads to attract bees and other insects, so increasing biodiversity.

Pedestrian crossings would also be made larger and safer.

Access to the area for drivers would change, with access to Churchill Way from the south only, while car parks on Station Terrace would be accessible from the north. Access for deliveries on Queen Street would change to Windsor Place, leaving the street from the west end only.
