A MOTHER and son won their family a fortune after scratching off a £100,000 a month for a year prize on a scratchcard during their weekly shop.

Dinner lady Sue Rees, 48, and her son Connor, 24, buy two National Lottery Scratchards every time they go shopping together and always split their winnings.

Before their life-changing luck, Sue, who has worked throughout the pandemic making packed lunches for children, and Connor, a warehouse worker, had only ever won £150.

The mother and son from Pontypridd could not believe their luck.

Connor said: “Mum has always been convinced she’d win the lottery one day but I’m a bit more sceptical and never thought it would happen. We took the scratchcard straight back into the shop and the shopkeeper confirmed we’d won big, we just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t really.”

The pair plan to split their winnings equally, and Sue is planning to spend her half on renovating the home she shares with her husband Roy and their four children.

Sue, who has worked at Coedpenmaen Primary School for more than 17 years, took on a second role at the school’s breakfast club a few years ago but, despite her amazing windfall, she has no plans to give up either role.

Sue said: “I love that school, I couldn’t leave. I’m going to make sure that my family is well looked after but I’m definitely going to keep my feet firmly on the ground.”

The dinner lady is also planning a family trip to Disneyland Paris next year, getting there by train, and admitted she won’t be jetting off anywhere soon as she is terrified of flying.

Connor’s plans include buying a home of his own.

He said: “The first thing I’m going to do is buy my own house. I’ve already started looking, I can’t wait. I’m definitely going to stay local as I love being part of the community.

“I live with my family at the moment but as soon as I’m living on my own, I’m going to treat myself to some new pets. I’ve never wanted a dog or a cat but I’m going to get a bearded lizard and chameleon. I can’t wait.”

Connor – who works for the same company as his dad – is also planning to treat his dad to the holiday of a lifetime.

Connor said: “I’ve always wanted to take my dad to New Zealand and now I can. We have cousins there and we’re constantly texting about the rugby so, as soon as we can, I’m planning to go and visit them.

“I’ve got it all planned out. We’ll fly to Hawaii first and spend some time there, then head onto New Zealand and come back via Hong Kong. Mum doesn’t fly so she won’t mind if the two of us go on our own.”

Sue and Connor bought their winning National Lottery Scratchcard at Ponty Convenience Store on Taff Street, Pontypridd.
