One person dies as 170 new cases identified

ONE more person has died with coronaviru­s in Wales and 170 new positive cases have been identified.

Figures from Public Health Wales (PHW) yesterday show that the 170 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in the latest 24-hour period marks a fall from 193 reported on Monday. This brings the total since the start of the pandemic to 203,988.

The number of people who have died with coronaviru­s in Wales within a month of a positive test now stands at 5,344.

The infection rate across Wales is now 60.3 cases per 100,000 population based on the seven days up to February 25, a drop on 64 cases reported on Monday.

The latest data also shows that 933,485 people have now received a first dose of the coronaviru­s vaccine, up 7,816 from the figure of 925,669 published 24 hours earlier.

Meanwhile, 111,716 people have now received both doses of the vaccine, a rise from 103,819 on Monday.

Conwy remains the local authority with the highest infection rate in Wales with a seven-day rate of 93.9 cases per 100,000, Gwynedd is second and Torfaen is third.

In terms of new cases reported in the last 24 hours, Cardiff is highest with 19, followed by Swansea and Caerphilly with 12, Newport with 11 and Blaenau Gwent, Wrexham and Rhondda Cynon Taf with 10.

All other local authoritie­s reported single figures including Flintshire and Carmarthen­shire with nine, Pembrokesh­ire, Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot with eight, Monmouthsh­ire and Merthyr Tydfil with seven, Torfaen, Gwynedd and Powys with five.
