New cameras installed to enforce M4 50mph rule

-

NEW speed cameras will go live on a stretch of the M4 in Newport later this month, the Welsh Government has confirmed.

The new cameras are currently being installed between Junction 24 (Coldra) and Junction 28 (Tredegar

Park) and will begin operating on March 15.

The speed cameras are part of a new “50mph average speed enforcement” system planned to improve congestion in the area.

Work to install the cameras began on

Monday, with closures planned to be taking place between J24 and

J28 over the next two weeks.

The stretch of road will be closed overnight – between 8pm and 6am – in the eastbound direction until tomorrow, and westbound between next Monday and next Friday. The Welsh Government said the speed cameras should be in place and operational by Monday, March 15.

Explaining the reasoning behind the new system, the Government said it aims to:

■■Help manage ongoing congestion issues along this stretch of the M4; ■■improve journey time reliability during peak times and provide smoother traffic flows; ■■reduce the risk of collision; and ■■provide better air quality.

The cameras will be operational and the mandatory 50mph speed limit will be monitored by Go Safe during the initial period. It will allow for full systems and enforcement checks to take place and give motorists time to get used to the new speed limit.

Notices of prosecution will then begin to be issued in the summer.
