So little in return for my council tax

-

I FOUND it interesting that Cllr Iona Gordon was waxing lyrical about the success of the revised rubbish collections in Cardiff (Echo letters, March 4, “Most residents on board about the new bin days”).

Well it may be going well on the western side of the city but in Cardiff Central, certainly Roath Park, that isn’t the case at all. We are only in week two of the revised scheme and we have already had a glitch in that our green bags haven’t been collected (again).

This isn’t anything new as it was a regular problem over Christmas and the New Year. I agree with Mr Ron Boyce (“Surely wrong time for refuse reorganisation”, Echo letters, March 3) and I believe the revised system should have been delayed. As we have been moved to a Friday collection day, this means that these uncollected bags will be left out until at least Tuesday next week. On past experience I doubt that anything will be done then and that we will have to wait until next Friday for these bags to be removed.

When you consider that I pay more council tax than someone living in a very large house in Belgravia, London, it begs the question what am I getting for my money? I live in a very modest property with no available public transport and little in the way of other services. However, I will be expected to pay an increase of 3.5% for the 2021-22 council tax year with no services provided.

This goes to show yet again that there is a wide disparity between the level of service received in different areas of Cardiff. Our area is worse off compared to other parts of Cardiff, which is very unfair.

Cllr Gordon quite rightly praised the work of the bin men during the pandemic, but I wondered why she failed to acknowledge the efforts of all the hard-working staff on the council as well. I know that I am grateful to all of them, especially the people who work and aren’t seen by the public. A “thank you” costs nothing but goes a long way.
