No ‘active’ adult cases at outbreak hospital

-

A HOSPITAL which experienced a significant outbreak of coronavirus last year now has no “active” adult cases, it has been revealed.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that this is the first time this has occurred since September 2020.

However, the health board said there are still patients at the hospital who are recovering from the virus and have since tested negative.

Between late September and December 14, 2020 there were 348 positive cases linked to the outbreak at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, based in Llantrisant, and 95 deaths.

It led to the temporary suspension of elective surgery and the diversion of emergency admissions to other hospitals in the region.

Commenting on the fact no active adult cases are now present at the hospital, Rhondda Taf Ely locality director of operations Rachel Burton said: “We are delighted to say that there are now no adults with active Covid infection at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

“This is the first time this has been the case since September 2020 and marks a real milestone in the efforts of our staff and communities to come through the pandemic.

“My colleagues and I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to follow the restrictions and contribute towards this success.

“We would like to ask the public to keep staying local, wearing a mask and observing social distancing for a while longer. We have a number of patients in our hospital still recovering from Covid and it’s essential that we continue to work together to keep the figures going in the right direction.”

Community transmission in Rhondda Cynon Taf now stands at 30.3 cases per 100,000 population – a huge drop from in excess of 800 cases in early to mid December.

The local authority has also had one of the highest numbers of Covid-19 deaths per head of population in the UK since the pandemic started.
