SIX more people have died with coronavirus in Wales and the overall infection rate has remained unchanged.

The latest daily update from Public Health Wales (PHW) yesterday recorded 196 new positive cases in the last 24-hour period, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 207,842.

It follows the reporting of six more deaths on Saturday and the recording of 208 new positive cases

The number of people who have died with coronavirus in Wales within a month of a positive test now stands at 5,488.

The infection rate across Wales is now 42 cases per 100,000 of population based on the seven days up to March 14, which is unchanged from Saturday and still below the key Welsh Government benchmark of 50.

A rise in infection rates this week was caused primarily by outbreaks in some local authority areas including Merthyr Tydfil, Anglesey and Conwy.

The percentage of tests coming back with positive results is now below the key 5% benchmark at 3.6% in the past seven days.

The data show that 1,258,769 people have now received a first dose of the vaccine and a further 338,959 have had both jabs.

Swansea saw the highest number of new cases reported yesterday with 27 followed by Cardiff with 22, Caerphilly with 19, Newport with 13, Merthyr Tydfil with 12 and Neath Port Talbot with 11.

All other local authorities had less than 10 new cases including Anglesey and Conwy with nine, Gwynedd and Powys with seven, Carmarthenshire with seven, Wrexham, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan all with five, Torfaen and Pembrokeshire with four, and Denbighshire with three.
