New designs unveiled for town’s landmark building

-

NEW computer-generated images show what Pontypridd’s YMCA building will look like when its huge makeover is completed.

Designs have revealed the local landscape and national anthem have inspired the development of the unique glass façade that will be a main feature of the building.

The complete renovation of the building, which dates back to 1910, is set to be complete later this year.

Initially, plans were approved by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council in 2016 to transform the building into a culture and community hub, but because of changes to funding and the economic climate, those behind the YMCA announced plans had to change later down the line. In 2018 it was said the plans became “significantly more compact than previously approved”.

Now it’s planned that the building will become a centre for culture, creativity and the arts.

On Monday, Pontypridd YMCA and Artis Community Cymuned unveiled the latest designs.

Inspiration for the designs include how the confluence of rivers drive down the valleys from Brecon through the Rhondda and Pontypridd to the sea. The artwork also references father and son Evan and James James, writers of the Welsh national anthem, which will be overlayed onto the artwork.

The designs have been put together by artists Heinrich & Palmer in partnership with Addo Creative, Rhondda Cynon Taf Arts Service, Pontypridd YMCA and Artis Community Cymuned, and has been funded as part of Arts Council of Wales’ investment in the building, which is now beginning to take shape with the main steel structure now in place.
