Ten still in custody after ‘violent incident’ in city
TEN people remained in police custody yesterday, and an injured man remained in hospital, as police continued to investigate a “violent incident” in Cardiff.
South Wales Police were called to reports of an assault shortly after 4pm on Sunday, March 21, on Wentloog Avenue.
Twelve arrests were made and one man was left with potentially lifechanging injuries.
There was a heavy police presence at the scene until yesterday morning when only a few officers and vehicles remained.
South Wales Police said that investigations were continuing.
Ten of the 12 men arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, assault and possession of offensive weapons, remained in police custody.
No further action is being taken against two other men who have been released from custody.
Of the three men taken to hospital on Sunday, two have since been discharged and a 27-year-old man was yesterday continuing to receive hospital treatment for what were described as “potentially life-changing injuries”.
It is understood that those involved its in the incident are known to each other.
A forensic examination of the area was continuing yesterday and weapons have been recovered. A police cordon at nearby Shirenewton has been lifted.
A police spokeswoman said: “We thank the local community for their patience, understanding and co-operation.”
A Section 60 order was extended on Monday for a further 24 hours until 5pm yesterday.
It was the third time in four days that the notice had been issued for the area.
The notice authorised police officers to stop and search any pedestrian – or anything carried by them – for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments without good reason, or to stop and search any vehicle, its driver and any passenger, for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments.
There was a very heavy police presence at the scene on Monday morning with at least 50 police officers present.
Shortly after 6pm on Monday, it was confirmed that dozens more officers were sent to the scene of the incident.
Armed police were pictured arriving at the scene, and a police helicopter flew overhead. A police dog unit was also seen and several emergency service vehicles were present.
Some people who live in the travellers’ site on Wentloog Avenue said on Monday they were not being allowed back into the site.
