Rugby the winner in clash of titans

-

MAY I say how I empathised with the views as expressed in the “Winners” and “Losers” columns of the Echo (March 22).

The playing skills, commitment and passion of players on the one hand, together with the calmness and control of the match officials, were highlighted to such good effect that the reader could sit back and enjoy or agonise over the whole France v Wales match once again.

For it was a match that deserves to be savoured. Wonderful in its array of individual skills and teamwork, the match deserved a five-star rating for its drama from start to finish, with the captains earning special praise. Alun Wyn Jones, immense as a player, was immense in defeat. Interviewed minutes after the devastating final-play score, he proffered no excuse, being more concerned that those at home should feel the team had given their all. Huge credit also to Charles Ollivon, who inspired France to one herculean effort after Paul Willemse had been red-carded.

Your mention of Dan Biggar will always trigger the “Welsh fly-half debate”. I am a great fan of this warrior and on this occasion I would have wanted him to stay on the field of play until the last post had sounded. Talented though replacement players may be, it is asking a lot to expect them to replace experienced campaigners (Biggar, Davies, Owens and Francis) for the final 12 minutes of a frenetic battle.

In all of this unfolding drama the match officials Luke Pearce (referee) and Wayne Barnes (TMO) displayed exemplary calmness. Difficult decisions were made and explained clearly. Mutual respect of player and referee was evident.

Rugby was the winner on the day. In years to come we shall look back with gratitude to the teams of France and Wales, aided by the match officials, who gave us such a wonderful game during a period ever mindful of the Covid-19 pandemic.
