Investigat­ion into town-centre fire that left one person dead

A PERSON has died after a fire at a property in Bridgend town centre.

Police said the alarm was raised at a property at Nolton Street, Bridgend at around 9.15pm on Tuesday.

A statement from South Wales Police said: “One person has died and their family is aware and being supported.”

Nolton Street remains closed and a police cordon has been set up outside the premises. An investigat­ion continues into the cause of the fire.

Extensive damage has been caused to the building, and neighbouri­ng properties affected by the fire had to be evacuated, but nobody else was injured.

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Lewis, said: “This tragic incident is extremely distressin­g for the family involved who are being supported by us.

“Our examinatio­ns are continuing at the scene as we try to establish how the fire started.

“There is nothing at this stage to suggest the fire was deliberate, however until our investigat­ions are complete we cannot rule anything out at this time.

“We are working as quickly as we can to establish the circumstan­ces.”

Chief Fire Officer, Huw Jakeway, thanked the team for dealing with the incident overnight.

He said: “My thanks to crews, officers & personnel from Joint Fire Control from @SWFireandR­escue who have been dealing with this challengin­g & complex incident overnight.”

On Tuesday evening South Wales Fire and Rescue Service posted the following message online: “Crews from Bridgend, Kenfig Hill, Pencoed and an aerial appliance from Cardiff Central are dealing with a building fire in Nolton Street, Bridgend. @swpolice also attending.”
