Littering condemned after crowds turn out
ABANDONED beer bottles, food wrappers, nappies, plastic bags and other trash have left popular parks, beaches and waterside walks filthy after the hottest day of the year.
People walking around the Cardiff Bay barrage and on Barry Island on Tuesday evening and yesterday morning were left appalled by the rubbish left behind.
Trash was also left strewn around parks like Pontcanna Fields in Cardiff.
Visitor spots were busy on Tuesday as temperatures hit 21C on the hottest day of the year so far.
But bins were pictured overflowing with litter and empty bottles and cans of alcohol were left scattered on the steps of the Senedd yesterday morning.
One woman told the Echo: “I live in the centre of Cardiff Bay and I am constantly witnessing people publicly urinating on my doorstep, in the car park, outside the shops, it’s disgusting.
“The amount of rubbish and glass that had been deliberately thrown on the ground is concerning.
“No thought to how it could affect dogs especially as the glass can stay in their paws. There are also so many families, children and people on bikes who use the area.”
It was the second day a large amount of rubbish had been left, prompting a major clean-up operation.
On Tuesday, Cardiff council said its teams cleared a “sizeable” amount of rubbish from the Cardiff Bay area and urged people to follow coronavirus rules.
There were also pictures from Barry Island of empty cans, plastic buckets and nappies being washed up on the beach.
The beach was packed on Tuesday as people made the most of the sunshine and the start of the Easter holidays, but there was anger about the amount of rubbish that was left behind.
One walker said: “They left all their rubbish to get washed away.
Bottles, toys, masks, towels, and of course nappies. I litter picked and the bins were vastly overflowing.”
Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said on Tuesday: “It was Wales’ warmest day of the year so far quite easily and a very warm March day.”
