Cardiff Triathlon postponed due to government ‘caution’

-

THE Cardiff Triathlon has been postponed with organisers pointing to Wales’ “cautious” approach to easing coronavirus restrictions.

Organisers have said that “after much deliberation and with a very heavy heart” they have decided to push the popular event back 2022.

They said that while they support the Welsh Government’s approach, the event sector currently has “no clear indication” when restrictions may be eased leaving them in an “impossible situation”.

This year’s event was due to take place on June 27.

In a statement, triathlon organiser Always Aim High Events said: “Following England’s roadmap to recovery which was published a few weeks ago, there has been a natural optimism in Wales.

“However, it is clear that the Welsh Government will continue with their current approach of unlocking the country with caution, so that in the long run, sectors can reopen with a higher degree of confidence. What this means in practice is the continuation of reviewing covid measures every three weeks using scientific data, with alert levels decreasing one level at a time.

“Unfortunately for those of us in the event sector it does mean that we currently have no clear indication of when restrictions will be eased enough for outdoor sporting events such as ours to return. Given that our events are usually many months in the making, it has become extremely difficult for us to prepare.

“Whilst we completely support the views of the Welsh Government on the safe return of events, it does put us in an impossible situation in terms of preparing for the next few months.”

It added that after discussions with a “supportive” Cardiff council, it was left with “no other choice” but to postpone the Cardiff Triathlon, duathlon and swims until 2022.
