‘Delusional’ or desirable – the £1,000 student room

A TINY student bedroom is on the market in Cardiff for an eye-watering £1,000 a month.

The listing in Cathays has been described as “delusional”, with others saying it just shows the state of the Cardiff student property market.

The room in the property on Miskin Street is smaller than the width of two phone boxes, measuring just 2.18m by 1.62m.

The total cost runs at £1,050 per person per calendar month including bills and servicing. Towels, bedding and linen are provided alongside weekly cleaning included.

The new kitchen comes complete with “mood lighting” and an ice machine, and a hot tub is featured in the garden.

Although advertised as a six-bedroom property, the listing states that the house could be adapted to a group of five by changing the ground floor front bedroom into an additional living room with sofas and a TV.

Although some of the rooms are much bigger, one of the renters will be faced with a room that appears to only be able to fit a bed but not much else.

The listing states: “Probably the best student house in Cardiff! 6 bedrooms in a newly refurbished super cool pad with a 7 seater hot tub within a 5 min walk of Cardiff Uni. Cardiff City Centre. Towels, bedding and linen provided. Weekly cleaning included. The new fully equipped kitchen with mood lighting, ice machine and full cooking equipment makes a perfect base for cooking and relaxing.”

The total cost for the house is £6,300 per calendar month.

The post has been shared a number of times on social media, with some people questioning how students can afford property in that price range.

One described it as “daylight robbery” while another said it was delusional.

But others said it’s a fair reflection of the market. One said: “I can guarantee you students will want that pad. Hence the price, if there is demand then of course they will set such prices.”

Another added: “That will get snapped up double quick. Have you seen the prices of the student let high rise places. This is a lifestyle that students will want and will pay for if they can.”

Entire houses are on the market to rent for a similar price each month, but there are a number of other similarly priced properties in the area aimed at students.

A studio flat at the controversial Zenith building, dubbed the ugliest in Cardiff, is advertising a studio flat for £758 per calendar month. That listing includes “grab & go breakfast” and “complimentary community events” including weekly yoga, motivational talks, themed parties, “wellness weeks”, movie nights and trips.

The building also includes an auditorium cinema space.

It comes as a number of large student blocks have applied for a temporary change of use this year, to allow non-students to rent rooms. Developers said the coronavirus outbreak has had a “significant impact” on student housing, with fewer students coming to the capital.
