Secrecy around Doctor Who set

A FILM crew has been spotted filming more scenes for the latest series of Doctor Who in Cardiff.

Filming took place near The Gate Arts Centre, in Roath, with fans and passers-by sharing their photos on social media.

Vans and lighting cranes were spotted outside the arts centre.

The Doctor Who film crew are no strangers to Cardiff having shot many series of the much-loved show in the capital and were recently filming in Grangetown, leaving one local cafe owner stunned after Bradley Walsh and John Bishop both stopped by for a cuppa.

One Twitter statement said: “Been to the #DoctorWho filming but they were packing up as I got there. There was someone who they were very keen for us to not see leaving though.”

Crew members were also seen holding umbrellas over a car window. Fans reported that Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill were spotted on set.

It was confirmed last month that Swansea-born writer Russell T Davies would return to the series as showrunner, a decade after he first stepped down from the role.

“I’m beyond excited to be back on my favourite show,” said the It’s A Sin writer, who will resume his role as the show prepares to mark its 60th anniversary in 2023.

As he returns as showrunner, one of Russell’s first jobs will be to decide who will take over as the next Doctor following Jodie Whittaker’s exit.

He told the BBC: “There’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm.”

“I’m still a viewer for now,” he added.

Staff and customers at The Hideout coffee shop in Grange Gardens also got a surprise last month when cast members popped in between filming.

Bradley Walsh and John Bishop dropped by the coffee shop during a break, and had been spotted filming with Jodie Whittaker at Grange Gardens.

At the beginning of this year, it was announced Bishop would replace Walsh in the 13th series as the new companion, with the 54 year old saying that boarding the Tardis was a “dream come true”.

The filming of Doctor Who comes just after filming for the Netflix movie Havoc took place elsewhere in the city. As previously reported in the Echo, the filming saw Cardiff Bay’s Bute Street turned into a snowy American scene, complete with fake snow and American police cars.
