Lewis eyes doubling up as early term goals help inspire students

CARDIFF Met University have climbed their way into the top five of the Cymru Premier League after an excellent goal-scoring spell and will look to keep it going tomorrow when they host Haverfordwest County at Cyncoed (kick off 2.30pm).

The Students kept up their prolific net-finding last Saturday with a 4-2 home victory against Cefn Druids.

Centre back Emlyn Lewis opened the Archers account with a headed goal from a corner and notched his fifth of the season in the process, which has to be a real bonus for Christian Edwards.

The 6 foot 3 inch West Walian has been playing for Met for eight seasons and his best goal total to date for a season is four, so his tally of five so far has prompted him to consider setting targets.

“I’m really happy to have added goals to my game, as a centre back I know what my first job is and that’s defending but the bonus of scoring at the other end is special,” said Lewis.

“I have five goals so far but most important is, the team are playing well, we are still in the Welsh Cup and MG Cup and have a good chance of progressing in both.

“In the next seven days we play Haverfordwest at home, and Barry away in the league next Tuesday, followed by Colwyn Bay in the Cup away next Saturday.

“If we do well in this massive period I will be happy and if I add a goal or two I might just set myself a target of double figures for the season”.

The Students’ boss Edwards takes a more cautious approach, just looking ahead to tomorrow’s game against a rejuvenated Haverfordwest, who earned a decent point when hosting Connah’s Quay last weekend, when a Ben Fawcett goal earned the Bluebirds a point a 1-1 draw.

“Tomorrow’s game against ‘Havy’ is vital to keep our climb up the table going and future games will have to wait”, concluded the ex-Welsh international.

Meanwhile Penybont travel to Newtown and need to start taking advantage of large portions of possession and chances in games, turning draws into wins.

Rhys Griffiths’ team drew 1-1 last Saturday at home to Caernarfon after having enough chances in the first half to put the game out of sight.

Caernarfon clung on until half time and just about earned a point after the break, which meant Penybont remain in ninth place in the table after seven games, with eight points.

After a marvellous fourth place finish last season, most people would have expected Griffiths’ team to sustain a high position in the JD Cymru Premier, but in a muchimproved league where no games are easy to get points from, wins are vital and a top six slot for Bont would be a good season again this time around.

Newtown will be on a high after winning at Jenner Park last Saturday with a 3-0 scoreline, but once again points will be not be served up on a plate and a tight game looks to be on the cards at Latham Park.

Barry Town’s solid start to their season has taken a bump in the last fortnight, especially in light of the Linnetts’ 3-0 defeat in the Welsh Cup at the hands of Cardiff Met.

Gavin Chesterfield’s team were undone by Newtown and their forward Aaron Williams in particular, who scored a hat-trick for the Robins in a 3-0 home defeat.

Barry, like Penybont, are still just a few wins away from once again being in a good top six position and a win tomorrow at Flint Town could see Chesterfield’s team leapfrog their opponents into third place.

Consistency seems to be a tough act at present for Barry but if they were to take four points in the next four days against Flint and the Met, then a top four finish would look a possibility once again.

Meanwhile in the Cymru South, league leaders Llantwit Major host Afan Lido at their Windmill Lane ground at 2.30 pm. Taffs Well host Trefelin at Rhiw Dda and Cambrian and Clydach travel to Cwmbran Celtic.

In the Ardal South West League, Dinas Powys host Ynyshir Albions at the Murch, Caerau Ely host Penydarren and Cardiff Dracs travel to Ynysygerwn.
