First Minister leads tributes to MP from Welsh politicians

-

TRIBUTES to Sir David Amess have been paid from across the political spectrum in Wales.

First Minister Mark Drakeford tweeted: “Deeply saddened to hear about the death of Sir David Amess. A truly despicable and horrifying act.

“My thoughts are with his friends, family, and constituency staff during this distressing time.”

Welsh Secretary Simon Hart said: “The news that my colleague David Amess has been stabbed & killed whilst serving his constituents is a desperate tragedy for his family, friends and community.

“It’ll raise many questions but for now I know we’ll all be thinking of his family & remembering his kindness & dedication.”

And Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price said he was “shocked and deeply saddened to hear this terrible news”.

He added: “Sir David was one of the kindest, most decent and deeply committed politicians I’ve ever known. It was an honour to call him a friend.

“My thoughts are with his loved ones during this awful time.”

In the wake of Sir David’s fatal stabbing, and amid heightened concerns about the protection of elected representatives, the Senedd yesterday confirmed there will be a meeting next week for staff and members to look at future security arrangements.

A spokesman said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Sir David Amess. We take the safety of everyone involved with the Senedd extremely seriously. Members have been informed of a hybrid drop-in session with security staff early next week to discuss and advise on any concerns. We provided security advice and guidance to all Members at the beginning of this new Senedd and continue to hold regular security briefings, including in Members’ constituencies. Our security staff are always available to be contacted on any security-related matter.”
