Morris is a super saver to give Bont a date with Well

-

PENYBONT and Taffs Well have been paired together in the quarterfinals of the JD Welsh Cup after victories last weekend and both are in Friday night action this evening in their respective leagues.

In the Cymru Premier, Penybont travel to Aberystwyth tonight and will be in good spirits having progressed to the last eight of the Welsh Cup after defeating Caernarfon on penalties last Saturday.

Their goalkeeper Ashley Morris was their hero with an outstanding performance in the shootout, when the veteran stopper made three penalty saves.

Rhys Griffiths and his team can now look forward to a favourable home tie against the Wellmen in February, but it’s the league tonight and Penybont will start as favourites to secure an away win at Aber, who are in 10th place in the league.

There is a massive incentive for Antonio Corbeisero’s home team, though, as a home victory would leapfrog them above Penybont into a mid- table position.

After their excellent 2-1 away win at Buckley Town last weekend in the Welsh Cup, Taffs Well have another difficult encounter this evening when they travel west to play Andy Legg’s Llanelli in the Cymru South.

Marcus Jones and Jack Fox were on target for the Wellmen in their victory up north last week which takes their club to the Welsh Cup quarter-finals.

Craig Sampson and coach Donny Hooper were overjoyed with their team’s performance against Buckley and hope they can raise their game again tonight at Stebonheath Park against a strong Llanelli team who are trying to edge their way back into the Cymru Premier.

“We have beaten some good teams of late,” said Sampson. “And once more on Friday we will have to be at our best to get a result which could take us back into the top six of the league”.

It’s first against second in the Cymru South tomorrow as Pontypridd Town host league leaders Llantwit Major at the University of South Wales.

Karl Lewis’ Llantwit have produced some superb football so far this season and stand top after winning 10 and drawing one of their 11 games played so far which is some record, while Jonathan Jones’ and his Pontypridd team are also still undefeated after winning eight and drawing three of their fixtures played, so to call this fixture the game of the day is a simple task.

Scott Young’s Cambrian and Clydach are also in action this weekend and they travel west to Ammanford this evening and will be looking for an away win after a sticky patch in their season of late.

Back in the Cymru Premier, Barry Town have a tough fixture as they travel to play Bala Town at Maes Tegid tomorrow. In their first fixture against Bala this season, the two sides battled out a 0-0 draw with ex-Wales midfielder Dave Edwards expressing how physical the game was.

Edwards can expect much of the same tomorrow as Gavin Chesterfield’s Barry will want to get back on winning terms after an indifferent run of form of late.

Bala sailed through to the Welsh Cup quarterfinals last week with their ace forward Chris Venables

scoring a hat-trick in a 1-3 win at Haverfordwest and keeping the regular winner of the league’s golden boot quiet could be key to tomorrow’s result.

Cardiff Met University are home at Cyncoed tomorrow and host last season’s champions Connahs

Quay Nomads.

The Archers were surprisingly beaten 1-0 in a Welsh Cup upset at Colwyn Bay last weekend and will need to take the chances they create to get back to winning ways and continue their good spell of late in the league.

Connah’s Quay, under the guidance of new manager Craig Harrison, won 2-0 last Friday at Flint in the cup, but their league form of late is a miserable one point from 12.

A tough contest looks in prospect tomorrow in what should be a tactical affair between two wellorganised teams.
