How they rated

- BY GLEN WILLIAMS

ALEX SMITHIES

Made a terrific save from Bamba in the first half and a couple thereafter. Neither goal was his fault and his kicking actually improved, barring one sliced clearance.

PERRY NG

Didn’t have too much of an impact on proceedings in the first half and was then hooked at the break.

MARK MCGUINNESS

Culpable for the handball which led to the penalty and got done by Uche Ikpeazu at one point down the flank, which presented Boro with a big chance. Pulled out of position for Payero’s goal. An off day.

ADEN FLINT (C)

Got run around once or twice and had a real battle on his hands up against Ikpeazu in the air. Probably came out about even in that battle. Cracked a header against the crossbar at the other end.

CIARON BROWN

Put in a couple of big tackles, but always struggles when trying to join the attack at the other end of the pitch. Got spun by Ikpeazu in the lead-up to Payero’s goal.

WILL VAULKS

Left chasing shadows the majority of the time in the middle of the park. Had a decent spell when Cardiff were on top but it was another tough day in the engine room.

MARLON PACK

Became embroiled in a physical battle in midfield, scrapping and giving a bit of needle. Took his concentration away from mopping up and upping the tempo of play. Booked.

RYAN GILES

His influence has just waned in recent weeks and he was quiet again against Boro. Needs to get that spark back. Picked up a bit after the break.

JAMES COLLINS

Had a volley blocked within the first few minutes and then failed to impact the game really after that. Spurned one glorious chance in the second half, volleying at the keeper from just yards out. Confidence is completely shot.

MARK HARRIS

Showed willing and endeavour to get into good positions, but made the wrong decision a lot of the time. Butchered a chance just before half time, which was frustrating.

STAR MAN: RUBIN COLWILL

The one most willing to take defenders on and create. Had a right old ding-dong with Bamba and came out on top a couple of times. Ran with intent and produced a couple of decent chances after the break.
