POLICE are investigating after a car being driven along a village street crashed into a number of parked vehicles and then fled the scene.

South Wales Police has confirmed officers were called to Royal Cottages in Maerdy at around 9pm on Sunday following reports on a road traffic collision.

On arrival, they found that a car driving along the street had collided with several parked cars and its driver had “made off”.

The matter remains under investigation, and people living nearby took to social media to warn residents to avoid the area as it had been cordoned off.

One Maerdy resident said: “I heard a bang, it must have been around 8.30pm. I looked out and saw the blue car and assumed someone had just bumped into it! It wasn’t till I went up to close the bedroom curtains I saw the extent of the crash!

“Plenty of fire brigade on scene by then, I posted on the group [a local community group on social media] to let people know that part of the road was closed.”

Photographs from the incident show several damaged cars in the road, while fire crews appear to be assessing the damage and ensuring the cars are safe.

South Wales Police has confirmed there have been no reports of injuries.

A statement from South Wales Police says: “Shortly after 9pm last night emergency services were called following a road traffic collision at Royal Cottages, Maerdy. A car being driven along the street was in collision with a number of parked cars.

“The driver made off from the scene. The matter remains under investigation.”
