31 more deaths with Covid as new record rate recorded

ANOTHER 31 people in Wales have died with coronaviru­s, it has been revealed, as the sevenday infection rate reaches a new record high.

New figures from Public Health Wales (PHW) published yesterday – which covers a 72-hour period to 9am on Monday due to technical issues – show there were 31 further Covid deaths recorded to bring the total in Wales to 6,117.

There were also 5,288 new positive cases recorded.

The latest seven-day infection rate across Wales based on the cases for every 100,000 people now stands at 719.9.

The areas of the country recording the highest numbers of Covid cases in the latest 24-hour period were Cardiff with 575, Carmarthen­shire with 402, Swansea with 384, Caerphilly with 370, Newport with 354 and Pembrokesh­ire with 315. Neath Port Talbot had 256, and Powys had 189.

Infection rate for every 100,000 people in each area for the seven days up to October 21:

■■Blaenau Gwent: 1,329.8 (up from 1,315.5) ■■Torfaen: 1,069.6 (up from 1,035.5) ■■Caerphilly: 1,048.7 (down from 1,080.8)

■■Neath Port Talbot: 951.7 (down from 1,037.6) ■■Newport: 906.4 (up from 883.1)

■■Vale of Glamorgan: 891.6 (up from 869.8) ■■Pembrokesh­ire: 834.5 (up from 809.1)

■■Cardiff: 789.6 (down from 819.3)

■■Rhondda Cynon Taf: 773.4 (up from 761.8) ■■Monmouthsh­ire: 768.6 (down from 792.9)

■■Merthyr Tydfil: 759.2 (up from 689.6) ■■Carmarthen­shire: 619.8 (up from 618.2) ■■Bridgend: 612.7 (up from 549.8) ■■Ceredigion: 605.3 (up from 462.2) ■■Denbighshi­re: 604 (down from 640.4)
