New boss has brought buzz back to the squad - Dom

-

Newport County’s Dom Telford has described how the arrival of new manager James Rowberry has got the whole squad buzzing with excitement.

Telford scored twice to help get Rowberry’s reign off to a flying start with a 3-1 win at Bristol Rovers on Saturday, extending County’s unbeaten run to five games in League Two.

And, ahead of the new manager’s first home match against Stevenage on Saturday, Telford says the appointment has given the players a huge shot in the arm.

“The new manager has come in and there is a buzz around the place,” said the 24-year-old forward.

“We are hoping to kick on now and keep this run going.”

Rowberry replaces Michael Flynn, who left the club on October 1 and Telford believes the former Cardiff City coach can build on the work done by his predecessor and that of interim manager Wayne Hatswell over the past few weeks.

Hatswell, who was Flynn’s assistant and will remain in the role under Rowberry, oversaw a win and three draws during his time in charge.

“We were almost on autopilot until the new manager came in, we know what our jobs are and what we needed to do,” explained Telford.

“We were just getting on with it but now the lads are all buzzing to have him in. First of all, he is a good guy. And secondly, he knows his stuff so in my opinion he is a great addition to what we already have here.

“We are all on board with what he is trying to do in the little time that we have had to get on the training pitch. Hopefully there are exciting times to come.”

Victory against Rovers saw County climb to 12th in the table and they remain just three points below the play-off places.

“The lads are gelling because it’s a big squad but it’s a new squad as well with a lot of new faces from the summer,” said Telford, who was signed by Flynn in January.

“We are coming together and the only way is up. We are not looking behind us, we are looking to improve on what we have already done.”
