Bluebirds legends Young and Legg go head-to-head

- With Mark Jones Sponsored by

TWO Cardiff City legends will be in opposite dugouts this evening in the Cymru South League as Scott Young’s Cambrian and Clydach travel west to play Andy Legg’s Llanelli at Stebonheath Park (7.30pm).

Both Young and Legg played their part when Lennie Lawrence’s Bluebirds defeated then Premier League leaders Leeds United 2-1 in an historic FA Cup tie at Ninian Park in January 2002.

Legg was involved in the sending off of Alan Smith while Young latched on to a loose ball from a Graham Kavanagh corner to set Ninian alight and create a victory which is at the top of many Bluebirds’ fans greatest games list.

It’s a top-six battle tonight with Cambrian currently placed in fifth after two wins in a row against Ammanford and Risca United, whom they defeated last Friday by a 5-0 margin. Ryan Prosser (2), Cam Strinati, Jarred Wright and an own goal settled a one sided affair.

Legg’s Llanelli beat Cwmbran Celtic 4-2 on away soil last Saturday, with Calum Bateman and Kyle Copp getting a brace each.

An entertaining game is in prospect tonight with touchline banter between both dugouts, plus two teams in form could provide plenty of Bonfire night fireworks.

Taffs Well are also in Friday action as they host Cwmbran Celtic at their Rhiw Dda ground.

After a couple of smart results of late the Wellman had a miserable 5-0 defeat last Friday evening against Briton Ferry, so home advantage for Craig Sampson’s team could be key if the they are to make their way back into the top half of the table.

Llantwit Major are still top of the table and host Swansea University tomorrow at Windmill Lane, where they comprehensively defeated Port Talbot by six goals last week to put them on 34 points.

Second placed Pontypridd are just one point behind Llantwit and still undefeated.

Jonathan Jones was elated after his team’s excellent 1-0 win last Saturday against Goytre United, where Aidan Lewis scored the winner. Ponty host Ammanford tomorrow at the University of South Wales.

In the Cymru Premier league, Barry Town host Aberystwyth at Jenner Park tomorrow.

Kayne McLaggon and Jordan Cotterill were on target last weekend to gain three points in an excellent 2-1 away win at Caernarfon.

Gavin Chesterfield was pleased to get the fine away win to celebrate his 500th game in charge of Barry.

On the opening day of the season, Barry suffered a 2-1 defeat at Aberystwyth but current form will make the Linnetts warm favourites against second from bottom of the league club.

Antonio Corbesiero’s Seasiders were unlucky to be defeated against second-in-the-table Flint last Friday and play with an attacking style but just seem to lack experience in key areas, which may cost them against a home team on a good run of form.

A Sam Snaith goal gave Penybont their first ever victory against Bala Town last Saturday and Rhys Griffiths’ team will have to be at their best again tomorrow when they face the long trip north to Flint.

Penybont are now as high as fourth in the table after a decent run of form and once again are being quoted as an outside chance for a top-two finish which guarantees European football.

Griffiths has recruited well and his squad is full of young ex-professionals

who are trying to prove themselves to get back into the pro game.

Dan Jefferies at centre back is starting to look classy and at the age of 22, has plenty to offer.

Ryan Reynolds and James Waite from Cardiff City are also looking excellent recruits and Lewis Clutton, ex-Bristol Rovers, looks quality at this level.

Tomorrow’s game at Flint is a massive contest where Griffiths’ young guns will definitely need the help and experience of the likes of Ashley Morris,

Ashley Evans and Lewis Harling to see them gain an away win which could put the Bridgend club as high as third in the table and close is on that precious second spot.

Cardiff Met suffered a 5-0 away defeat at the hands of runaway league leaders TNS last weekend and will be happy to be back at their Cyncoed Campus tomorrow to play host to Caernarfon Town.

The Students are still well placed in the table and have 15 points in the league having won four games drawn three games and lost four which just about sums up their manager Christian Edwards belief that: “On our day we are capable of winning against any club, its just putting together a little more quality and consistency to remain in what will be a very tough top six to stay in come the end of the season”.

The same can be said for Caernarfon who are presently seventh in the table just a point behind the Met so a close contest should be in prospect tomorrow at Cyncoed.
