‘Rubbish’ Christmas trees blasted

- ANTHONY LEWIS Local Democracy Reporter anthony.lewis@reachplc.com

RHONDDA Cynon Taf council leader Andrew Morgan has criticised the state of Christmas trees that have been put up this year in the county.

Cllr Morgan publicly criticised the contractor responsible for supplying and erecting Christmas trees for the council at locations across the county at principal town centres.

He said he was furious that yet again the company, Centregreat street lighting, has supplied what he described as “rubbish” and said “residents deserved better.”

He posted pictures of trees on social media of trees in Aberdare and Treorchy but also highlighted ones in Mountain Ash and Tonypandy.

The leader tweeted to Centregreat: “I’m really disappointed in the quality of Christmas trees supplied for RCT town centres yet again. Last year you had to replace several after I complained.

“This year is as bad – think we better look for a new contractor in future as RCT residents deserve better.”

Local residents have also taken to social media to complain about the tree. Referring to Treorchy’s Christmas tree that had been erected by the Parc and Dare theatre, one said: “How crap is this Xmas tree and we are supposed to be the best high street in Wales. Whoever was in charge of putting this tree by the side of the Parc and Dare should be ashamed of themselves.”

“The trees in Treorchy always look as though they have been put up and decorated by someone who has had 10 pints of bow,” said another, while others said it was “shocking” and “awful” and put the high street to shame after local businesses put so much effort in to their window displays for Christmas.

One person joked: “I think they throw it there from the top of the Bwlch,” and another said: “It looks like its been brought down from the attic, taken out of the box and stood straight up.”

Cllr Morgan added: “Following my complaints in previous years, the contractors were warned several months ago to make sure the trees supplied are fit for purpose. Residents who have seen the photos of the Christmas trees and messaged me certainly don’t think they are. The council pays good money for trees in each of the principal towns, and as such residents deserve, and I expect, better than we are getting.”

Centregreat has been approached for comment.
