The couple who are a cut above

A HUSBAND and wife who set up their own hairdressing salon have beaten rivals from across the UK to be named the best in Britain.

Scarlet Knight Hairdressing and Beauty is nestled in the heart of a busy Talbot Green street and the couple have now opened a second salon in Church Village.

They met over 12 years ago working in a Cowbridge hairdressers and as they became a couple decided to go it alone and opened their own shop back in 2012.

After being nominated for the award by their team, and voted for by their loyal customers, the salon scooped up the Hair Salon of the Year title at the Great British Hair and Beauty Awards in Manchester last weekend.

Charlotte and John Knight have worked together since the day they met and whilst most of us would end up single if we worked with our partners the pair have got the balance just right.

Charlotte, 30, said: “I love working as a couple. We both have our different strengths. John manages the financial side of the business whereas I work more with training the staff and running social media.

“Because we both have our different strengths we come together and work really well.

“As we’re a married couple family is really important to us and we instil that in our team. We’re like a closeknit family, it’s so lovely.”

Charlotte and John now own two busy salons and employ 20 staff between the two sites, with plans to expand into owning a training academy where other hairdressers can learn the technical and financial side of running a business.

This isn’t the first time the salon has won an award – it’s a multiple award-winner of the ISA Restyle Awards “Employer of the Year” and the coveted “Salon of the Year” title in the Welsh Hair and Beauty Awards. In 2019 Scarlet Knight Hairdressing won the VQ Employer of the Year Award which Charlotte says is their “proudest moment.”

The salon was up against big companies in a range of industries, not just hairdressing, and they won for their efforts in training apprentices.

“We work a lot with apprentices over the years, we put a lot of time and effort into them. One of our apprentices from five years ago is now our salon manager, progression within our team is so important to us.”

Their latest win in The Great British Hair and Beauty Awards for Salon of the Year was the last piece of the puzzle, they said.

“It’s really rewarding, we work so hard. We have a young family and we put in a lot of hours into the business over the years. So to then get this type of recognition is amazing.”
