Roadworks due to be completed before Christmas
AN end date for motorway roadworks that have been causing long delays in parts of north Cardiff and on the A470 has been set.
The essential work on bridges around junction 32 for Coryton have lead to the closure of two lanes in the area since the beginning October but is now due to finish on December 16.
It has led to long delays in the area with some commuters saying that it adding nearly an hour to daily journeys.
Before the work is finished total closures between junction 32 and 33 will be in place on Monday, November 29, and Tuesday, November 30, between 8pm and 6am.
Traffic will be diverted via the A470, A48, and A4232 during the night-time closures.
Traffic Wales says essential maintenance works have been needed at the Taff River and Taff Rail bridges located immediately west of junction 32.
A spokesman said: “These works are to refurbish the bridge deck to provide a new waterproofing system, new expansion joints, and surfacing to prevent the concrete deck from water ingress and winter salts while ensuring the ongoing serviceability of the structure.”
The spokesman added that they were also taking the opportunity to upgrade the safety barriers in this location. The existing waterproofing was first installed more than 40 years ago in 1978 and it has exceeded its lifespan and needs to be replaced.
Traffic Wales says inspections have identified that this system has failed and water is leaking through the joints. “Failure to do this work now will lead to unplanned future interventions which would be more disruptive than these planned works,” the spokesman added.
Traffic Wales says that due to the nature of the works the activities do not allow the road to be fully opened during the day due to the surfacing being removed from the bridge decks.
A 24/7 contraflow will be installed eastbound between junction 33 Capel Llanilltern and junction 32 Coryton from December 1 until December 16.
The website adds: “The activities are also weather-dependent and cooler temperatures at night are not suitable for installing waterproofing.”
Lane closures are needed to allow access to the bridge deck for the waterproofing works and to protect the workforce during the works.
