Sign up and protect glorious mountains

-

THE Cambrian Mountains Society (CMS) is launching a campaign to have the stunning, unspoilt landscape of the Cambrian Mountains, pictured above, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The Cambrian uplands spread across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Powys, and include glaciated plateaux, lakes, mountain rivers and valleys and host a wide range of threatened plants and animals.

Our president, TV naturalist Iolo Williams, describes the Cambrians as “the last true wild area of Wales, where you can truly lose yourself in nature”.

We note that the EU is introducing new laws to require member states to restore ecosystems, recognising the dependence of human society on the ecoservices they provide. It is a travesty that elsewhere laws are being introduced to ensure that the ecosystems upon which humanity depends are managed for resilience, while here in mid-Wales some of our most important landscapes and habitats still have no protection.

As a key element of our campaign, we are collecting signatures for a petition to deliver to the Senedd – once it has reached 10,000 the issue of designating the area as an AONB will need to be debated in chamber. Please sign our petition – petitions.senedd.wales/petitions/245150.
