Bay boardwalk work won’t finish until next year

-

WORK to repair the Cardiff Bay River Walk will not be completed until 2023 as work has temporarily paused during the summer, Cardiff Harbour Authority has said.

Repair works to replace decking boards on the lower boardwalk in front of the Senedd began in February this year, with the area originally set to be closed off until the end of March.

A provisional date for work to be finished was given as March 31 this year by Cardiff Council when the closure was first announced in February. Pictures of the popular boardwalk at the time showed workmen at the site, with all of the decking removed and water visible through the remaining slats.

But pictures of the area taken earlier in the month show that it is still fenced off, with one sign stating that the footpath is closed and two others re-directing those looking for boat trips to Roald Dahl Plas.

Cardiff Harbour Authority has now said that the work is expected to be finished in 2023.

The authority said that the works to repair the boardwalk have paused temporarily in order to facilitate events taking place in Cardiff Bay, with work set to recommence in September.

A Cardiff Harbour Authority spokesperson said: “To facilitate events taking place in Cardiff Bay work on the Boardwalk has paused temporarily and will recommence in September. Access to boat operators has been maintained via Roald Dahl Plass, Mermaid Quay and Pierhead during the busy summer season. Subject to any unforeseen circumstances works are currently expected to be completed in spring 2023.”
