Screamadelic party in town as rockers head to city for gig

- Kathryn Williams

SCOT-ROCKERS Primal Scream are set to bring their Screamadelica celebration to Cardiff tonight as they celebrate 30 years since the iconic album’s release.

Initially, the gig was meant to take place at Alexandra Head in Cardiff Bay, but the venue was changed in the spring and now they are performing at Cardiff Castle.

The gig closes out another round of live music at the iconic castle, as sadly Tears For Fears have had to cancel their performance.

The city centre fortress has already seen A-ha, Pete Tong and the Heritage Orchestra, Bryan Adams, Michael Bublé and, just last night, Lewis Capaldi perform this summer.

Other than the big alteration of venue from the Bay to the castle, the event was initially due to start at 2.30pm, but now it’s at 6pm. Hot Chip have also been removed from the bill, while Peter Hook & The Light’s support set has been changed to a DJ set.

However, Happy Mondays have confirmed, via their social media, that they are still coming to Cardiff – their performance comes after the sad death of member Paul Ryder. Organisers Live Nation have also confirmed they are still performing.

Founder member Paul is the brother of Shaun Ryder and the band released a statement on their Facebook page last week, which said: “The Ryder family and Happy Mondays band members are deeply saddened and shocked to say that Paul Ryder passed away this morning.

“A true pioneer and legend. He will be forever missed. We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time. Long live his funk.”

Approximate stage times for tonight’s show are: 6pm to 7.15pm – Peter Hook DJ set; 7.15pm to 8.15pm – Happy Mondays; and 8.45pm to 10.30pm – Primal Scream

Organisers have asked gig-goers to only take bags less than A4 size.

Items not allowed in the castle for the gig include: food and drink; umbrellas, parasols; seats and chairs; air horns; selfie sticks; spray cans; Chinese lanterns; dangerous or hazardous weapons/items; firework; flags; gas canisters; glass (of any kind); klaxons and other similar items capable of making loud noise; and laser pens, scooters, skateboards and bicycles.

As with previous Cardiff Castle gigs traffic will be managed on Castle Street to ensure gig-goers can leave the venue safely.
