HAALAND AT THE DOUBLE IN CITY WIN

PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND-UP

-

REIGNING champions Manchester City got their season off to a perfect start with a 2-0 win at West Ham. Pep Guardiola’s side dominated possession as they sent out an early warning to their title rivals.

Erling Haaland opened his City account with a double. The 22-year-old Norwegian delivered exactly what City manager Guardiola wanted following his summer signing from Borussia Dortmund when he gave City the lead from the spot nine minutes before half-time.

And he wrapped up the points with a polished finish midway through the second half.

Erik ten Hag endured a chastening reminder of the size of the job he has on his hands at Manchester United as his first game in charge ended in a 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.

United were outplayed in the first half as two Pascal Gross goals gave the Seagulls a deserved lead.

Ten Hag’s men did improve after the break, but only found the net through an Alexis Mac Allister own goal.

Substitute Josh Dasilva’s late rocket salvaged Brentford a point as they fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Leicester.

Dasilva crashed home an unlikely equaliser with four minutes remaining for the Bees, who had been a clear second best for most of the match.

Leicester had been more than good value for their 2-0 lead after goals from Timothy Castagne and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall before Ivan Toney pulled one back.

Promoted Fulham marked their return to the top flight with a battling 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Craven Cottage.

Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose 43 goals helped deliver the Championship crown, broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when he headed past Alisson Becker.

Darwin Nunez hauled the Reds level with an improvised back-heel just after the hour mark, only for Mitrovic to put Fulham back in front from the penalty spot.

But with 10 minutes left, Mohamed Salah slotted in after being set up by Nunez.

Nottingham Forest suffered a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle in their first Premier League game in 23 years.

Forest held out during a goalless first half at St James’ Park. The deadlock was broken just before the hour when defender Fabian Schar crashed a 20-yard effort in off the post.

Newcastle added a second when Callum Wilson flicked in a low cross from Joelinton.

Tottenham came from behind to beat Southampton 4-1.

Saints captain James Ward-Prowse had silenced the home crowd when he opened the scoring in the 12th minute.

Spurs were soon back on level terms when Ryan Sessegnon headed in and Eric Dier nodded home a second.

Just after the hour, Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu scuffed a cross from Son Heung-min into his own net, then the impressive Dejan Kulusevski added a fourth.

Promoted Bournemouth opened the campaign with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium.

The Cherries took the lead inside two minutes when Colombia midfielder Jefferson Lerma drilled home and Welsh striker Kieffer Moore headed in a late second.

Leeds recovered to beat Wolves 2-1 at Elland Road.

Daniel Podence fired the visitors into a sixth-minute lead. Leeds were back on terms in the 24th minute through an angled drive from Rodrigo.

With 16 minutes left, Patrick Bamford’s low cross was turned into his own goal by Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Chelsea won 1-0 at Everton through a penalty from Jorginho.
