A 35-YEAR-OLD acting student is hoping to be crowned Miss British Isles Elegance after wowing the judges to scoop a place in the national final.

Lowri Wilson, from Porthcawl, is in with a chance of winning a modelling and promotional contract and other prizes.

The mum-of-four will be raising awareness around mental health and supporting Bridgend-based charity Mental Health Matters Wales (MHMW) as she enters the final next month.

As one of 50 finalists, Lowri is representing Porthcawl in the Bridgend area and is already Miss Porthcawl Elegance 2022.

The final will be held in Chester on Friday, September 9.

She decided to take herself back to education in her early 30s and is about to start her third year BA Acting degree course at the Carmarthen campus of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

Lowri, who has always had a passion for acting since a young age, started as a television extra five years ago and has been involved in two TV productions Channel 4’s Half Night Stand and Channel 5’s Parking Hell.

On applying for the Miss British Isles Elegance 2022 competition, Lowri said: “I have never done anything like this before, I didn’t have the confidence and didn’t know anything about the competition before I applied.”

She said she has been overwhelmed with support from her local community and added: “A local lady named Melanie Griffiths offered to make me beautiful accessories for the event and Coronation Street actor Danny Shepherd, who plays Jimmy Dixon, wanted to be a sponsor.”

After getting more than 20 sponsors and getting so much interest on social media, Lowri wanted to do more and contacted MHMW. She wanted to use the platform to raise awareness for mental health.

“There’s always been a massive stigma around mental health, my aim is to get people talking more about mental health and share their own stories with one another.”
