Boats set sail across Bay in fitting tribute to Sean
THERE was an incredible sight in Cardiff Bay on Saturday afternoon as a fleet of boats sailed in unison in a fitting tribute to a local man who had a “lifelong passion” for all things nautical.
Sean Carter was an active committee member at Cardiff Yacht Club for many years and was involved with several sailing clubs across South Wales.
He recently died at the age of 62 after a battle with cancer.
Many people who knew Sean and sailed with him over the years made their way to Cardiff Bay on Saturday to pay their respects.
A fleet of about 30 boats completed several circuits of the area at around noon, flying flags and displaying bunting, close to Mermaid Quay.
Many of Sean’s friends then continued to celebrate his memory with a drinks reception at Cardiff Yacht Club.
The crew of Sean’s sailing boat paid tribute to their friend by saying: “Sean Carter’s enthusiasm for sailing has been a lifelong passion.
“He took part in numerous sailing competitions including at a national level in several dinghy classes, collecting many trophies along the way.
“Sean was active in several sailing clubs in South Wales and contributed to the development of racing, especially encouraging new sailors to participate in races to improve their sailing skills.
“More recently, Sean moved from dinghies to sailing yachts, again with the same determination to win races and encouraging people to engage in the racing to become better sailors.
“Many people will remember Sean as a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and helpful character and he will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.”
