AMERICAN TV star Adam Richman, most famous for tackling eating challenges in Man v Food, visited Cardiff in a new show and tried his first ever Welsh cake, describing them as “fantastic”.

He visited Fabulous Welshcakes, opposite Cardiff Castle, to sample the iconic treats on his series Adam Richman Eats Britain.

“This puts the traditional scone in a headlock and goes ‘why are you hitting yourself’,” he said. He even loved the “comforting” smell of them which he compared to making sugar cookies with his mum.

Adam said he was especially amazed at how much he enjoyed the sultanas. “You got me loving raisins, that alone deserves a Nobel Prize,” he said.

Speaking after the presenter’s visit, Maria Wall, 33, who works at Fabulous Welshcakes, said: “My colleague said he was a lovely man, he gave lovely words about our Welsh cakes”, adding she hopes the programme will encourage more people to visit the shop.

Thanks to their location Fabulous Welshcakes already get visitors from all over the world, including Saudi Arabia and Japan, and have been featured on other TV shows. Ms Wall said: “The more we can get the word out the better.”

Adam’s visit was shown in the latest episode of the show Adam Richman Eats Britain where he tours Great Britain, trying food in local shops and restaurants.

In Cardiff he also tried Glamorgan sausage at Snails Deli in Rhiwbina, Welsh rarebit at the Potted Pig, and pierogi from Pierogi in Cardiff Market.

Fran Sykes, 52, owner of Snails Deli said: “It was great fun.

“We were quite surprised, my kids have been watching his programmes for years.”

She added that Adam tried making the sausages himself and was “very much into the process”.

Mrs Sykes was optimistic that the programme would encourage tourists to venture outside the city centre.

“If tourism comes to Cardiff it comes to the centre, people don’t normally come to the suburbs,” she said.

In the show, Adam described the sausages as “fun to eat”.

Wioleta Orzechowska, 38, works at Pierogi and featured alongside the American broadcaster in the programme.

“It was a new experience, it was interesting, somebody watching what we do here,” she said.

In the programme Adam told viewers that he is half Polish and said these were “some of the best pierogi I have ever had”, praising the “punchy duck flavour”.

Adam Richman Eats Britain is available on catch-up through Sky, Virgin, or Discovery+.
