TWO police officers waded into the freezing sea to rescue a vulnerable man.

The fearless police officers jumped into the water in an early morning rescue to save the man yesterday.

PC Dean Greenslade and PC John Curry of South Wales Police made their way into the water at around 8am, following a call raising concerns about the welfare of a man on Aberavon beach front.

When the officers arrived, the individual, who was both injured and agitated, ran off into the sea and continued to walk deeper into the water until it was up to his neck.

Concerned he would fall unconscious or be dragged under the water, the officers took the decision to wade into the water and drag the man to safety.

A South Wales Police spokesman said the man was taken to hospital. Yesterday, he was in a stable condition.

Sergeant Gary Humphreys said: “PCS Greenslade and Curry went above and beyond the call of duty this morning to save this vulnerable man.

“The outcome could have been very different if it was not for their actions.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman added: “We were called on Wednesday, July 15, at approximately 8.07am to reports of a person needing urgent medical assistance at Aberavon seafront, near Port Talbot.

“We responded with one emergency ambulance.

“One patient was transported to Morriston Hospital, Swansea.”
