Stephen’s murder shocked the nation, but is Britain any different now?
IT IS almost three decades since the shocking racist murder of teenager Stephen Lawrence by a gang in south-east London. The 18-year-old A-level student was set upon by a gang of youths and stabbed to death on his way home on April 22, 1993.
The horrific case went on to change attitudes on racism and towards the police, after it was concluded that the handling of the murder was affected by issues of race, with institutional racism found at the heart of the Metropolitan Police Force.
But 27 years on, has Britain really changed?
The killing of George Floyd in the US triggered global protests with thousands also taking to the streets in Britain demanding an end to racial inequality here.
In this special live programme, presenters Rageh Omaar and Anushka Asthana are joined by a panel of high profile guests to examine how equal the UK really is and what needs to change.
The programme will showcase an exclusive poll taking a look at racism today and will discuss how much Britain has changed since Stephen’s murder.
Immediately afterwards, ITV will again show The Murder Of Stephen Lawrence, which tells the story of the aftermath through the eyes of his parents.
Starring Marianne Jean-baptiste and Hugh Quarshie as Doreen and Neville Lawrence, the two-hour drama recreates the night of the murder and follows the family’s fight for justice including the public inquiry into the police investigation.
