- IAN MITCHELMORE FOOTBALL REPORTER ian.mitchelmore@walesonline.co.uk

WALES will face England at Wembley in October as part of their continued preparations for Euro 2020.

Ryan Giggs’ men have not played since beating Hungary 2-0 at Cardiff City Stadium in November, a result that secured their place at the European Championships.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the summer tournament was put on hold for 12 months, although Wales will return to action in the Nations League later this year.

They will face each of Republic of Ireland, Finland and Bulgaria home and away in League B while there are two slots for friendlies to take place between September and November.

And it has been confirmed that they will also lock horns with Gareth Southgate’s side in the English capital on Thursday, October 8. The match is set to be played behind closed doors in line with current government guidelines. Even though it is only a friendly game, any clash with the old enemy whets the appetite of Welsh fans.

It also gives Gareth Bale and his young team the opportunity to test themselves against England stars like Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Liverpool right-back sensation Trent Alexander-arnold.

Wales last faced the Three Lions at Wembley in 2011 when Ashley Young’s effort proved enough for the hosts to win 1-0 in a Euro 2012 qualifier.

They also met England, of course, during Euro 2016, losing 2-1. However, Wales went on to top the group and have a much better tournament. Wales’ Nations League fixtures: Thursday, 3 September Finland v Wales (7:45pm), Sunday, 6 September - Wales v Bulgaria (2:00pm), Sunday, 11 October Republic of Ireland v Wales (2:00pm), Wednesday, 14 October - Bulgaria v Wales (7:45pm), Sunday, 15 November - Wales v Republic of Ireland (5:00pm), Wednesday, 18 November - Wales v Finland (7:45pm) ■ All fixtures are scheduled to be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future.
