Visitors set for animal magic as attraction reopens

-

THE much-loved animals of Swansea’s popular Plantasia are set to welcome back the public from today.

They include Rainbow the macaw, a long-standing member of the Plantasia collection, Asian leopard cats Nala and Aneurin – the newest of the attraction’s star animals – and playful crowd-pleasers Onesie and Joe the meerkats.

The facility, managed by Parkwood Leisure for Swansea Council, is opening for the first time since lockdown in March.

The reopening will take place in line with government restrictions so the Parc Tawe facility – carefully looked after during the pandemic – will look a little different to normal.

Pre-booking is essential, a one-way system is in operation along with social distancing guidance and hand sanitising points will be available.

General manager Anthony Williams said: “We’re delighted that we can welcome our public back – and we’ll make every attempt possible to make their visits as safe as possible.

“There will be marked routes around the venue to help, protective screens where needed and a reorganised programme of activities.

“There will be an intensive ongoing sanitising programme in high contact areas and arrangements to encourage social distancing in interactive areas.

“Many of our 160-plus animals have missed public interaction, with only staff to socialise with, but we’ve kept them in great condition along with the vast array of exotic greenery.”

Councillor Robert Francisdavies, the council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “I’m pleased to see Plantasia back open for the people of Swansea.

“Plantasia is ready once again to offer people the best in city centre fun and education.

“It’s been kept in prime working order for the past few months, the council’s partnership with Parkwood Leisure is strong and we’re pleased to have funded significant improvements in the past year. They help put the facility in a good position for the years to come.”

A £1.1m improvement package funded by the council and invested by Parkwood Leisure has brought an engaging new look and attractions to the venue – and the feedback from visitors, including families, schools and businesses, has been positive, seeing visitor numbers well up before the pandemic.

The council has put in place a support package to help support council-owned leisure services such as Plantasia through the pandemic.

Plantasia opening times from tomorrow are daily 10am-5pm. Changes to arrangements at the venue will be publicised.

Those who think they may be suffering symptoms associated with Covid-19 are asked not to visit and to follow government advice. ■ Website: www.plantasia swansea.co.uk
