Number of arrested Swans fans dropped last season

-

THE number of Swansea City fans arrested fell last season.

There were seven arrests in total in 2019/20. That’s down from 19 the season before, six in 2017/18, seven in 2016/17, 10 in 2015/16 and 17 in 2014/15.

Three of the arrests in 2019/20 were for public disorder and two for pitch incursions.

There were also three new banning orders for Swansea fans last season, taking the active total to 12.

Leeds fans were arrested more often than the supporters of any other club last season.

Police made a total of 52 footballrelated arrests of United supporters during the 2019/20 season, according to new figures released by the Home Office.

Cardiff’s arrest tally is the seventh highest number of arrests of any club in England and Wales. The majority of the arrests (16) were at home games, with the other 11 being at away matches.

Cardiff also saw seven new banning orders last season, bringing the active total to 25. They are designed to act as a deterrent for football fans against becoming involved in any acts of disorder.

The number of arrests across England and Wales was down, to 1,089 from 1,381 the previous season. Year-on-year comparisons aren’t really appropriate due to the coronavirus pandemic vastly reducing the number of games where fans attend matches.

Hate crimes at matches grew by almost 50%, despite the number of games being played behind closed doors. A total of 287 hate crimes were recorded by police at matches across England and Wales in 2019/20. That’s up from 193 in 2018/19 and 131 in 2017/18.

Hate crimes against sexual orientation more than doubled, from 37 in 2018/19 to 78 last season. Race hate crimes, meanwhile, increased from 152 to 214.

The number of new banning orders issued was also down, but again year-on-year comparisons can’t really be made. Mansfield Town fans received more new banning orders than supporters of any other club – 34. Stoke have the highest number of active banning orders (52).
