COOPER ISSUES SIGNINGS PLEA

BOSS KEEN TO ADD EXTRA STRIKER:

STEVE Cooper says Swansea City must make further signings if they are serious about mounting a promotion challenge this term.

Swansea maintained their unbeaten start to the 2020-21 Championship campaign by beating a disappointing Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 at Adams Park, a result that means they have seven points from a possible nine.

However, Cooper still feels his squad is very light in certain areas, particularly up front.

The head coach is keen to sign at least one striker before next month’s transfer deadline, with last season’s loan star Rhian Brewster almost certain not to return.

Cooper is also eager to add a central defender and a left-back to his ranks.

However, Swansea have hit something of a brick wall in recent weeks when it comes to adding to their squad.

And Cooper (circled, right) says the club must back their ambitions of securing promotion by recruiting more players in the final days of the transfer window.

“I’ve talked about what we’d like to do ourselves in terms of players coming in, but also I don’t want to lose any players as well,” he said.

“I don’t think we can with the numbers that we’ve got.

“I think you can see a hungry set of lads there.

“Nobody’s playing like they don’t want to be here. “Hopefully that’s the case. “If we end up doing nothing in terms of ins, then I’ll get on with it because I really believe in this set of players.

“The only thing I’ve made clear is that if we’re very serious about what we want to do, then for me some things need to happen.

“Whether they do or don’t, we’ll see.

“But the first day after the transfer window ends will be the same as any other day, and that’s working with the players who are ready to train and getting them ready for the next game.”

Goals from Andre Ayew and Jamal Lowe earned Swansea all three points against Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.

It means Swansea have started three consecutive Championship campaigns by claiming seven of the first nine points available.

The shutout at Adams Park also mean they have kept three consecutive clean sheets at the start of a league campaign for the first time in their history.

And Cooper admits he was hugely impressed with his side’s showing against Gareth Ainsworth’s men, although he conceded that the away side should have scored more goals to match their efforts.

“It’s always a good scoreline, especially away from home,” added Cooper. “We know that there’s no easy game in this league. “To think that we’ve won that game with that scoreline, I think we played some excellent football in the first half.

“I guess the only challenge for the players is that we should have scored a few more for the amount of good play that we did.

“The second half was about not so much seeing the game out because we really wanted to go and kill the game because we thought there were goals in there, but there were lots of positives from the game with two strikers scoring, the two wing-backs involved again, a lot of chances on goal, and a clean sheet away from home.

“We’re not a team that sits on the edge of our box, we’re a team that wants to be at the other end of the pitch.

“So to think that we’re not conceding at the moment is a good thing.”

Swansea return to action against Millwall at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday afternoon in what is the final game before the second international break of the season.

Millwall are also unbeaten and sit eighth in the Championship following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Brentford.
