- RYAN O’NEILL REPORTER ryan.oneill@walesonline.co.uk

TWENTY-TWO students at Swansea University have now been confirmed to have tested positive for coronavirus - almost double the number confirmed last week.

The university, which has two campuses in the city, confirmed yesterday that it had been informed of an additional 10 cases among its students, following last week’s confirmation that 12 students had tested positive for the virus.

A spokesperson for the university said: “Swansea University has been informed that there are currently 22 students at the university who have been confirmed by Public Health Wales (PHW) to have tested positive for coronavirus.

“We want to assure students, staff, visitors and the wider community that their safety is our top priority.

“We are working closely with the NHS and PHW who are taking the lead on the response to this development and are following the Test Trace Protect strategy. PHW is keeping us updated as to the circumstances and any further actions.

“We will be monitoring the situation closely and will continue to offer our updated advice on the University’s dedicated webpage.

“Furthermore, all relevant public health information, including regular updates, can be found on the Welsh Government website and at PHW.”

It comes after a number of schools in the city confirmed cases this month.

Olchfa School’s entire sixth form was sent home to self-isolate two weeks ago, while a lecturer at Gower College Swansea’s campus in Gorseinon has also tested positive for coronavirus.

Swansea has been in a local lockdown since Sunday evening, when it entered a phase of tighter restrictions along with Cardiff, following a rise in cases.
