Group claims to be Tories for Welsh independence

-

A GROUP calling itself Conservatives for an Independent Wales has announced its formation on social media, claiming to have the support of MPS and councillors.

But those claiming to lead the group say that for the moment they must remain anonymous, fearing they would face disciplinary action in the Tory Party if they identified themselves.

In a statement on Twitter, the group states: “The British Conservative Party is misaligned with the aims of Welsh independence. A great and concerted effort must be made if we are to convince our colleagues here in Wales of the cause.

“The independence movement has hitherto been dominated by socialists, Trotskyites and anarchists. We know there are individuals with conservative values within the indy movement, but they are either politically homeless or forced to sit on the fringes of Plaid Cymru. Our project was conceived to provide a home for them.

“@ Lab4indywales have seen a political opportunity and are seizing it. Whether we like it or not the UK is no longer united. The tide of Welsh politics is turning and if we want to keep it sensible we must keep it Conservative.”

The group is appealing to those Conservatives who want an independent Wales to share news of the campaign.

Sion Jobbins, who chairs the pro-independence group Yes Cymru, said: “We’ve had no contact with this group, but would welcome support from Conservatives. It’s important to have a broad base.”

But former Welsh Conservative Senedd group leader Andrew RT Davies said: “I can honestly say that I have never heard anyone express such views within the party since I joined it in 1997.

“Conservative principles include supporting the Union, so I don’t see how this would fit in.”
