Surgeons’ marathon effort raises money for a worthy cause
THREE NHS consultant plastic surgeons from Swansea got together for a very long walk and part run on Sunday when they tackled 26.2 miles in aid of national breast cancer reconstruction charity, Keeping Abreast, in this year’s virtual London Marathon.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and
Dean Boyce, Nicholas Wilson-jones and Amar Ghattura participated in the virtual 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon to spread the word about the benefits of breast reconstruction as well as raise much-needed funds.
On their joint Virgin Money Giving page, the trio, who are colleagues at Morriston Hospital, state:
“Breast reconstruction is an essential part of many women’s recovery from breast cancer. Restrictions to theatre access as a result of the Covid pandemic have meant many women have been unable to get this treatment.
“We completed the virtual London Marathon to raise funds and awareness in association with Keeping Abreast.”
Due to the pandemic, for the first time ever participants in the virtual 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon completed the event their way, joining 45,000 participants up and down the UK and across the world.
Lisa Becker from Keeping Abreast said: “Doing a challenge like this is a great way to show support and a wonderfully positive thing to do. We are extremely grateful to Dean, Nick and Amar for choosing Keeping Abreast and for raising funds for the charity at this highly challenging time.”
The three surgeons completed the virtual event, billed as The 40th Race, and will each receive one of the sought-after London Marathon medals and T-shirts.
