NEW WAY TO PICK YOUR PUMPKINS!

- CHRISTIE BANNON REPORTER christie.bannon@walesonline.co.uk

WITH Halloween fast approaching, it’s almost time to start picking and carving the biggest pumpkin you can get your hands on.

And for those living in Swansea, the popular pumpkin patch at a Gower farm is already open for business with thousands to choose from.

Despite being renowned for its Christmas trees, Poundffald Farm, in Three Crosses, draws huge crowds to its sprawling fields which are filled with little and large pumpkins during the month of October.

But this year will be a little different because of ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

As it stands, the local lockdown means that only Swansea residents can visit the farm.

This year, for the first time, you have to book online before heading to Three Crosses.

By heading to the website you can pay £2.50 per car to pick your own pumpkin, meaning that the farm can limit the number of visitors to aid social distancing.

Robert Morgan, who is the fifth generation of his family to run the farm, said: “We have limited the number of visitors this year instead of a big rush of people.

“It’s online booking only and we are restricting people to come here every hour so we have their details so we can contact them if necessary.

“You scan your ticket to come in and it’s a one-way system to the fields.

“They can pick up their sanitised wheelbarrows or sleds, which are new this year, and once you’ve picked a pumpkin up you have to put it in.

“People can still come here seven days a week.

“All of our barn area is outside so the whole event is outside.”

Once you’ve scanned your ticket and grabbed your wheelbarrow, you can head out into the fields to find your perfect pumpkin.

The farm has grown between 15,000 and 20,000 so there are plenty to choose from.

Mr Morgan added: “The smallest ones are £1.50 and they go up to around £6.

“The reindeer are here as well and you can buy food for them in our shop but you will need to wear a mask in there.

“I think the reindeer have missed the social interaction of people coming here.

“I like seeing families out enjoying themselves and I think people need it at the moment.”

While it’s hard to predict what restrictions will be in place during the festive period, Mr Morgan explained that people can head to the farm now to reserve their Christmas tree.

“You can come down and pre-tag your Christmas tree by putting a label on the tree and then you can come back at Christmas to pick it up,” he said.

“We will have one-way systems and you’ll be able to come back and get your trees cut down.

“The Christmas grotto will go ahead but we will limit the numbers and won’t be taking any chances.

“Last Christmas we started working with a delivery company and said that we would deliver the trees to customers with 48 hours.

“If it does come to a lockdown then that will be the way forward.”
