Substantia­l increase in positive cases as five further fatalities recorded

FIVE more people have died with coronaviru­s and more than 760 new positive cases have been identified, it has been revealed.

Figures from Public Health Wales (PHW) for yesterday show 764 new positive cases have been diagnosed following a lab test, a substantia­l increase on 487 on Monday.

The NHS body also said that five new deaths among people who had tested positive had been reported, bringing the total to 1,678.

Merthyr Tydfil still has the highest rate of infections in Wales with 207.2 cases per 100,000 people based on a rolling sevenday average, up from 205.5 on Monday.

Wrexham now has the second highest rate at 181.7 per 100,000 of population, up from 165.5 the day before, with Rhondda Cynon Taf third with 178.2 per 100,000 of population (up from 151.7).

The other local authority areas recording more than 100 cases per 100,000 included Flintshire with 168.5, Cardiff with 161.4, Bridgend with 142.1, Conwy with 122.9, Swansea with 120.7, Denbighshi­re with 113.9, Neath Port Talbot with 113.7 and Blaenau Gwent with 103.1.

The Wales overall infection rate is 110.1 per 100,000, which is up on 103.6 recorded the day before.

Around 2.3m people are now in local lockdowns across Denbighshi­re, Flintshire, Conwy,

Wrexham, Cardiff, Swansea, Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Llanelli in Carmarthen­shire, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Newport, Neath Port Talbot, the Vale of Glamorgan and Torfaen. Bangor in Gwynedd has now also been added to that list.

Cardiff reported the highest number of new cases on Tuesday with 110, followed by RCT with 100, Swansea with 55, Flintshire with 51, Wrexham with 48, Neath Port Talbot with 32, Bridgend and Conwy with 29, Denbighshi­re with 24, Carmarthen­shrie with 23, and Gwynedd with 22. ■ Other local authoritie­s in double figures included Newport with 18, Merthyr Tydfil with 15, Caerphilly with 13, Blaenau Gwent and Monmouthsh­ire with 12, Vale of Glamorgan and Powys with 11 and Anglesey with 10. ■ Meanwhile, Torfaen had five, Ceredigion had three and Pembrokesh­ire had one. ■ There were 114 cases from people outside of Wales included in the figures, which Public Health Wales said referred to mainly young people with Welsh home addresses but who were currently living outside Wales.
