Bent puzzled by Tottenham’s pursuit of Rodon
DARREN Bent says he’s puzzled by Tottenham Hotspur’s attempts to sign Joe Rodon from Swansea City.
Rodon’s future has become the subject of intense speculation for just over a week now, with the Premier League club seemingly increasingly confident that they will be able to strike a deal before Friday’s deadline.
West Ham United, Leicester City and Sheffield United have also been mentioned as possible suitors, but there has so far been no bid put on the table for the Wales international from anyone at this stage.
One point of contention appears to be a disagreement on the value of the player, with Tottenham allegedly rating Rodon at around £7m, £11m less than Swansea’s asking price.
There’s already a feeling that Spurs will not break the bank to sign Rodon, although Bent says the club are already well stocked when it comes to defenders.
Speaking about his former club’s valuation of the player on talkssport, Bent laughed: “I thought you were going to say something like he offered £5 less.
“But listen, they seem really keen on getting him, don’t they? Rodon in the door. You look at the amount of centrebacks they have.
“I know they lost (Jan) Vertonghen.
But they have Toby Alderweireld, (Davinson) Sanchez, Eric Dier plays back there and (Japhet) Tanganga can play there.
“I mean, how many centre-backs are they looking for?”
It could well end up being a case of one in, one out for Swansea this week, with the club understood to be making progress on a deal for Manchester City’s 20-year-old defender Joel Latibeaudiere, a member of the England Under-17 side under manager Steve Cooper which won the World Cup in 2017 alongside present Swansea players Marc Guehi and Morgan Gibbs-white.
