Toshack axed after stellar run

-

CAMERON Toshack has been sacked by Pafos FC.

The former Swansea City youth coach left SA1 to join the Cypriot club in December last year.

Pafos were in disarray at the time of Toshack’s arrival having won just three of their opening 13 league games of the 2019-20 season before the Welshman took charge of the club.

However, Toshack (right), along with fellow former Swansea youth coach Gary Richards, steered the club to safety following a string of impressive results and even came within a whisker of securing a top-six finish.

Such were his side’s efforts earlier this year, Toshack won the Cypriot First Division Manager of the Month award for February before football was brought to a halt because of the coronavirus outbreak.

However, he was sacked after Pafos defeated reigning champions APOEL 1-0 away from home on Sunday night, with his side reduced to 10 men early in the second half against the 28-time league winners. Reports in Cyprus suggest the decision to axe Toshack was made some time ago, with Dmitry Mikhailenko being announced as his successor. Toshack, who signed Swansea midfielder Jack Evans on loan in the summer, leaves Pafos having achieved the longest unbeaten run in the club’s history in addition to having the highest ever win percentage. Toshack and Richards enjoyed huge success during their time in charge of Swansea’s Under-23s, with the club’s young guns securing a league and cup double under the pair in the 2016-17 campaign. Joe Rodon, Oli Mcburnie and Daniel James are among those who progressed under the leadership of Toshack and Richards at Swansea.
