A WELL-TRAVELLED dad-of-two who made a living as a busker on the streets of Swansea died suddenly at his home, an inquest heard.

An inquest at Swansea Civic Centre into the death of Alan Christian Johnson, known as Christian, heard how he had a passion for playing guitar and surfing.

The former Grange Primary and Bishopston School pupil fell ill aged 10 having been diagnosed with a hole in the heart and had to undergo surgery in the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

He was regarded as well-liked and a hard worker growing up and had hobbies of surfing, swimming, and MMA, in which he obtained a brown belt, while he enjoyed music and playing his guitar.

He lived with his parents until he was 18 and then moved to a number of different addresses including Limeslade and Sandfields but maintained daily contact with them. He also had a job at the former nightclub Barons.

Sometime in his 20s, the inquest heard, he had been stabbed to the back of the neck in the Swansea area by a man he knew and spent time in intensive care but survived.

He went on to meet a woman, with whom he had a son, but in 2001 their relationship ended and he decided to move away to Biarritz in France.

While there he met another woman, whom he went on to marry, and the pair went to live in Fuerteventura and later welcomed a son. But their relationship ended and Mr Johnson decided to move back to Swansea where he moved into an address in Tontine Street.

He became friends with a man living nearby and the pair would regularly smoke crack cocaine together and also smoke heroin together monthly, the inquest heard.

Mr Johnson made a living as a busker in Swansea city centre and on Saturday, May 30, he went to Parc Tawe Retail Park with his friend to play his guitar but an inquest heard he could not do it as he “was not with it”.

They returned back to his home and Mr Johnson decided to lay down in the kitchen. His friend asked him to come into the living room but when he wouldn’t gave him a pillow for under his head.

Another person later attended the property and it became clear that Mr Johnson was in need of medical attention.

Paramedics attended but he could not be saved. He was 46.

There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a toxicology report revealed there were a number of drugs in his system.

Acting senior coroner Colin Phillips returned a conclusion of a drugrelated death, stating he died unintentionally as a result of a number of drugs taken in combination.
