Lord-lieutenant appoints two new deputies to support work in Wales
THE Lord-lieutenant of West Glamorgan, Louise Fleet JP, has appointed two new Deputy Lieutenants.
Commander Steve Fry and Gwyn Thomas join a team of 21 Deputy Lieutenants who assist the Lord-lieutenant in carrying out her duties as Her Majesty The Queen’s representative.
Stephen Michael Fry has been a Royal Naval Reservist for 35 years, achieving the rank of Commander.
For the last five years he has commanded HMS Cambria, the Royal Navy in Wales and home to more than 120 reservists from across South Wales, ending his illustrious naval career by overseeing HMS Cambria’s relocation to a £10m new build in Cardiff Bay.
He handed over command on October 14.
He is transferring to the Royal Air Force Reserves as a Wing Commander in November and will be working in an Optimisation Project Team reviewing the Service. Steve has worked in the financial services industry and set up his own financial advice practice in 2012. He is active in the local community and lives in Three Crosses.
Joseph Gwyn Thomas served as a police officer for over 30 years, firstly with South Wales and then Dyfed-powys Police, attaining the rank of Acting
Assistant Chief Constable with Dyfed-powys.
Gwyn has an active and longstanding involvement with youth and cadet organisations which saw him volunteer as a youth worker, serve in the Scouts, air cadets, command 1358 (Pontardawe) Air Cadet Squadron, attain a commission in the RAF Volunteer Reserves and have an involvement with local charities as a Trustee of Esgyn and Mind Cymru. He is currently Chair of No 3 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets, member of Wales & West Regional Air Cadet Council and Regional Chair of Mid & West Wales Reserve Forces and Cadet
Association (Wales). He currently runs his own successful leadership and management development company with clients in the UK, Middle East and Latin America.
Louise Fleet, HM Lord-lieutenant, said: “I am delighted that Steve Fry and Gwyn Thomas are joining the West Glamorgan Lieutenancy as Deputy Lieutenants. As experienced senior officers in the Royal Navy Reserves and Police respectively and with their professional and community interest they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their roles.
