How they rated

-

7 The Crystal Palace stopper snuffed out danger twice in quick succession in the first half, and was on his toes when Mexico threatened. Saved well with his feet from Lozano in the second period. Alert.

7

WAYNE HENNESSEY CHRIS GUNTER

The man of the night who has served his country with such distinction performed ably. Was at the heart of niggle which simmered away all evening. Solid as ever. Sad that supporters couldn’t be there to see him reach his special milestone.

BEN CABANGO

7 In the middle of the back three, Swansea City’s talented young centre-back had an early scare against the lively Lozano. After a wobbly start, passed the test against troublesome opponents. Would have benefited from having an experienced centre-back next to him, though.

6

RHYS NORRINGTON-DAVIES

Did OK in a makeshift backline. Lost his runner at a corner in the second half when Mexico really should have levelled.

TOM LAWRENCE

Playing in an unfamiliar defensive role of the left-hand side, the Derby man naturally looked more comfortable going forward than tracking back. Sent some searching balls into the box when he was on the front foot. Subbed.

JONNY WILLIAMS

7 Like Lawrence, was a square peg in a round hole at right wing-back. He did OK, but he is surely much better positioned further forward. His assist for Moore showed what he can do in the attacking third. But some food for thought for Mick Mccarthy, perhaps? Subbed late on.

DYLAN LEVITT

5 6 The Leeds United frontman played his role in the opener, feeding Williams down the right-hand side. Did the same with Robson-kanu in the second period. Would have wanted to be involved more, though. Subbed.

The on-loan Manchester United midfielder was also starved of possession. Had a shot from range on 40 minutes but fluffed his lines. Subbed at half-time.

TYLER ROBERTS KIEFFER MOORE

The big Cardiff City striker took his goal absolutely brilliantly, finishing a superb move involving Williams and Roberts. As ever, put himself about and won countless flick-ons. A real menace. Subbed at the break – perhaps indicating he’s starting against the Czech Republic.

RABBI MATONDO

A willing runner all night but often ran down blind alleys or into brick walls. Grew into the contest, though, and this was a decent showing all told. Subbed.

STARMAN: MATT SMITH

Despite not seeing a great deal of the ball in the opening exchanges, the Doncaster Rovers man had his passing boots on, picking out willing runners from the centre of the park when he was in possession. Did really well, especially with set-pieces. Possibly offside for Moore’s goal. Not that many will care.
